Although April 22 is officially Earth Day, many Earth Day-themed events now take place all throughout April, making it Earth Month — and why not? — the planet could always use some extra love. Here’s where to find Peninsula cities and community groups celebrating our big blue marble and highlighting the ways we can help the Earth. 

Stanford University, ongoing

Stanford University hosts a variety of events to celebrate Earth Month, including Earth Tones, a day of music, food and speakers at O’Donohue Family Farm (April 23); film screenings (April 24 and 25) talks on activism and a service day in the Arizona Cactus Garden.

San Mateo County libraries, ongoing 

The San Mateo County Libraries mark Earth Month with activities at various branches, including an online event on food preservation (April 13), a storytime and sunflower seed planting (April 23, Woodside), Earth Day-themed escape rooms (multiple dates and locations), a craft workshop to make plantable paper seed balls (San Carlos, April 23) and a trash-to-art competition (Foster City, April 27).

City of San Mateo, ongoing

On April 20, head to the main library to learn how to grow native “super plants,” pick up tips from sustainability experts to reduce waste and save money, and participate in an all-gender clothing swap and a games and puzzles swap. Additional events in April and May include a Ryder Park cleanup and party, an e-waste and shredding event, a compost and seedling giveaway, and a screening of the documentary “A New Climate Vision.”

Earth Day/Arbor Day, Santa Clara

Santa Clara’s communitywide celebration will include a performance, a tree climbing demo and booths promoting environmental education.

Fremont Union High School District Earth Day, Mountain View

The school district’s climate collective will showcase the progress it is making toward increasing climate education and reducing carbon footprint. View more than 50 projects from 285 district students and teachers. Free dinner and giveaways will be provided.

Earth Day Community Celebration, Saratoga

Montalvo Arts Center will host a day full of activities ranging from a garden demo and tour with Montalvo’s garden curator Ann Northrup to arts and crafts like Earth Day button making, a paint and plant workshop, and sculpture and illustration workshops. There will also be musical performances and food trucks.

Love Our Earth Festival, East Palo Alto

350 Silicon Valley hosts this event featuring a home electrification showcase, clean vehicle expo highlighting new and used electric vehicles, electric motorcycles, bikes and more, a market of plant-based food and drink, community groups sharing their expertise, crafts and activities for families, including a live reptile encounter, plus live music and performances.

‘Exploring Ecological Art’ with Danielle Eubank, online

Artist and climate activist Danielle Eubank, whose show “Ripple Effect” is currently on view at Palo Alto’s Pamela Walsh Gallery, hosts an online event for the Women’s Caucus for Art that explores ecological art. The talk includes a visual presentation and discussion about ecological art as a genre and the role of activist artists in addressing climate change.

Family Craft: Layers of the Earth, Palo Alto

The Palo Alto Library hosts a craft workshop for children ages 5-11 that explores the layers of the Earth using clay. Registration is required; class is full but a waitlist is available.

Sunnyvale Earth Day Festival

The city of Sunnyvale marks Earth Day with the grand opening of its new civic center in an event that features family-friendly, sustainability-focused activities and information from local organizations. Activities include sustainable arts and crafts for kids, a cooking demonstration from the Zero-Waste Chef, Anne-Marie Bonneau, live entertainment, guided urban canopy tours, a display of electric vehicles and info on home composting from master composters.

Arbor and Earth Day Celebration, Mountain View

The city of Mountain View combines its celebrations for Arbor Day and Earth Day into an event that features booths with Earth-friendly resources and information, workshops, an electric vehicle showcase, live music and animal programs, kids’ activity area and rock-climbing wall, plant-based food, tree walks and a group bike ride and a tree planting by the mayor.

Palo Alto Earth Day Festival

Palo Alto Earth Day Author Event: Heather Ferranti Kinser

Earth Day Drum Circle, Los Altos
The Ethical Culture Society of Silicon Valley hosts a drum circle in celebration of Earth Day. Visitors can learn some basic earth rhythms, as well as enjoy refreshments and learn to build a recycled peat pot for the garden. All activities are kid-friendly.

Earth Day on the Bay, Redwood City

Join the Marine Science Institute for a full slate of Earth Day activities. Hop aboard the Robert G. Brownlee research vessel for the Discovery EcoVoyage to uncover what’s swimming beneath the waves, or take part in the Shoreside Discovery and BioBlitz to identify and document as many Bay species as possible. Pack a picnic lunch for live music and dancing at noon, and check out the institute’s aquarium before or after Earth Day events – reservations are complimentary with paid registration for events.

Foster City’s Earth Day festivities will include booths from local organizations and businesses such as Byrd’s Filling Station and Peninsula Clean Energy, a plant pot making station, an induction cooking demo and mini clinics from Atlas Mobile Bike Repair. Inside the library, kids can create a craft from hard-to-recycle items. There will also be entertainment from Two Only Kids and treats from Jolly’s Teas Cream and Marshmallow Lab.
