Contest Rules & Guidelines
Entry Requirements
- Each writer may submit only one story
- Stories must be 2,500 words or fewer
- The Adult entry fee is $20; the Young Adult and Teen entry fee is $10
- Entries may not have been previously published
- The use of AI assistance is not permitted. Writers are fully responsible for the integrity of their submissions and are liable to be disqualified if AI tools are discovered in submissions
Format Requirements
- Stories must be submitted as PDFs
- Story documents should have:
- Double-spaced text
- 12-point Times New Roman font
- A title
- Page numbers
- Story documents should not include:
- The author's name (all stories will be judged blindly)
- Artwork
Eligibility Criteria
- The contest is open to anyone who lives, works or attends school in Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Atherton, Redwood City, Stanford, Portola Valley, Woodside, Mountain View, Los Altos, or Los Altos Hills
- Children under age 12 may enter the contest and will be judged in the Teen category
- High schoolers who are 18 may enter either the Young Adult or Adult category
Prizes
Adults
- 1st place: $500 cash plus $100 gift certificate to a local bookstore
- 2nd pace: $300 cash plus $75 gift certificate to a local bookstore
- 3rd place: $200 cash plus $50 gift certificate to a local bookstore
Young Adults and Teens
- 1st place: $100 gift certificate to a local bookstore
- 2nd place: $75 gift certificate to a local bookstore
- 3rd place: $50 gift certificate to a local bookstore
