From Indian-Italian fusion to build-your-own French fries, here are some new and soon-to-open San Mateo eateries. 

Potato Guys

Seaweed pepper sea salt fries, Cajun-style curly fries, Hokkaido corn chowder soup waffle fries and cumin BBQ tater tots are just some of the potato possibilities at Potato Guys. This fast-casual spot soft opened April 12 and also sells burgers ($12), fried chicken sandwiches ($12), chicken wings, chicken nuggets, soft serve ice cream and more.

Izakaya Fusion Grill Kietan

This recently opened yakitori spot offers a wide selection of yakitori skewers, including bacon mochi, chicken thigh with Kyoto green onions, wagyu steak with pineapple and rose salt, momo duck, pork cheek, tiger prawn and more ($2.98-$20.98). In addition to yakitori skewers, Izakaya Fusion Grill Kietan offers dishes like gyu don ($11.98), tonkotsu ramen ($15.58) and udon carbonara ($12.98). Find nonalcoholic beverages like Ramune ($5) and Calpico ($5), as well as alcoholic drinks like beer, sake and soju. Desserts include deep-fried sticky rice mochi with brown sugar ($5.98), mango mochi ice cream ($5.98) and more.

Taste of Sha Xian

This recently opened fast-casual restaurant offers snacks popular in Shaxian County in China’s Fujian Province, including a variety of noodles, soups and clay pot dishes. Walk in, and you’re greeted by two large, metallic sculptures of Lego men with mice heads. You’ll find ample neon orange seating, including booths and balconettes. 

Taste of Sha Xian offers specials like Shaxian wonton soup ($7.98), Shaxian noodles with peanut sauce ($6.98), Shaxian pork buns ($9.98) and more. For dessert, the menu includes items like brown sugar rice cakes ($7.98) and steamed custard buns ($5.98). Drinks include brown sugar ginger jujube black tea ($7.98) and rose oolong roasted milk ($7.98).

Superstar Dim Sum and Seafood Restaurant

With a grand opening set for May 1, this dim sum and seafood restaurant has an expansive menu. You’ll find dishes like walnut shrimp ($24), herbal chicken feet ($11.85), braised e-fu noodles with lobster ($36.88), XO sauce-style beef and bok choy pan-fried noodles ($21.95), stewed beef offal ($11.85), steamed egg yolk lava buns ($7.55), durian puffs ($8.55), BBQ pork puffs ($6.55), roasted squab ($18), soy marinated beef shank slice ($10.85) and much more.

Curry Pizza House

Are you ready for some heat? Curry pizza is coming soon to San Mateo. Curry Pizza House, a fast-casual pizza franchise specializing in Indian flavors, has locations across the Bay Area and nationwide, including in Palo Alto, Redwood City and Sunnyvale. 

You’ll find a variety of Indian-fusion pizzas, including chicken tikka, curry chicken masala, and chili paneer, as well as classic pizzas like veggie, meat lover’s and BBQ chicken and bacon. Curry Pizza House also offers vegan and gluten-free pizzas and dessert pizzas, like chocolate chip cookie and brownie.
