The last Saturday in April marks the 11th annual Independent Bookstore Day, a national one-day celebration of indie bookstores with author storytimes and talks, book signings, store discounts, exclusive merch, giveaways and more. Here’s what’s in store at Peninsula booksellers this Saturday, April 27.

Books Inc. Palo Alto

Families can take photos with Lowly Worm’s apple car from Richard Scarry’s children’s books. The day also includes snacks and deals such as buy a book, get a book. Visitors can take part in a golden ticket hunt from Libro.fm, with a prize of 12 free audiobook credits (one ticket available per store). Books Inc. members can enjoy double reward points.

The store hosts meet-and-greets with authors Pamela Adler (11 a.m.), Gary Singh (1 p.m.) and Johnny DePalma (3 p.m.). Visitors can take part in a golden ticket hunt from Libro.fm, with a prize of 12 free audiobook credits (one ticket available per store). Kids can enjoy a Richard Scarry-themed scavenger hunt. The store will also have Independent Bookstore Day merch, including book bags, prints and more.

The day features meet-and-greets with authors Janet Silver Ghent (1 p.m.) and Jully Garcia (3 p.m.), and plenty for kids to do, including a scavenger hunt, coloring stations and snacks. Plus guests can buy a book and get a prize.

Leigh’s Favorite Books, Bookasaurus, Sunnyvale 

The neighboring sister bookstores in Sunnyvale will each host a treasure hunt bingo game in which guests can search around the stores for items that correspond to those shown on a bingo card and win prizes, including gift cards, silly socks and more. The stores will also have special Independent Bookstore Day merch and will be offering refreshments.

The children’s bookstore celebrates Independent Bookstore Day and marks its 40th anniversary in Los Altos with author storytimes, giveaways and discounts, limited-edition items and a scavenger hunt. Storytimes take place throughout the day, with the author lineup featuring Seina Wedlick, Helen Taylor, Stephanie Lucianovic, Joy Steuerwald, Christine Evans, Charlotte Cheng, Tim McCanna, Rie Neal, Joanna Ho, Nicole Chen, Lily LaMotte and Ann Xu.

Kepler’s Books, Menlo Park

Writer and cartoonist Gene Luen Yang kicks off festivities with an interactive presentation and signing best suited for ages 8-15 that explores how videogames can inspire storytelling. Between 2 and 3 p.m., Kepler’s hosts signings with authors Dave Eggers, Michael Chabon, Shawn Harris, Khaled Hosseini, R.O. Kwon, Vendela Vida, Daniel Gumbiner and Rita Bullwinkel (books for all authors will be available for purchase). The day also includes trivia and a pet portrait drawing workshop for families presented by Illustoria magazine.

Reach and Teach, San Carlos

Stop in for homemade chocolate chip cookies and a scavenger hunt for a free year of audiobooks from Libro.fm. All books will be 10% off.

Ink Spell Books, Half Moon Bay

Bring your kids to meet New York Times bestselling author Mac Barnett and award-winning illustrator Shawn Harris as they discuss their latest collaboration based on their live cartoon, “The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza!” The event will be held nearby at the Ted Adcock Community Center, and Ink Spell will sell copies of Harris and Barnett’s books for signing. Stop by the bookstore Saturday to look for a golden ticket hiding inside – the lucky winner will receive a free year of audiobooks from Libro.fm.
