Stanford senior Brad Lawson was named conference and national men’s volleyball Player of the Week by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and the American Volleyball Coaches Association, respectively, for his performance in a pair of road victories over ranked teams last weekend.

Lawson, a 6-foot-7 outside hitter from Honolulu, combined for 40 kills, nine digs, five aces, four blocks and a .352 hitting percentage to lead Stanford to a weekend sweep at No. 9 Long Beach State and No. 11 Cal State Northridge.

The kill totals of 21 (vs. Long Beach) and 19 (vs. Northridge) were the highest of the season for the two-time first-team All-America and helped No. 4 Stanford improve to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the MPSF.

Lawson began to heat up late in the match against Long Beach to spark the comeback victory by winning the final two sets of the five-set match. Lawson had eight kills and no errors, and a .571 hitting percentage in that span. He also served five consecutive points, including two aces, during a 6-0 Stanford run that gave the Cardinal a 7-2 lead in the pivotal fourth set.

Lawson received the Sports Imports/AVCA Men’s Division I-II National Player of the Week for the fourth time in his career.

Stanford returns to action Friday at No. 2 UC Irvine and Saturday at UC San Diego to complete a 10-match road stretch.
