Swimming

The Santa Clara Valley Athletic League season kicks off with Palo Alto visiting Gunn at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

The girls and boys teams from both schools are among the best in the Central Coast Section.

The Titan girls are the defending CCS champions. Palo Alto finished fourth. The Gunn boys placed fourth and Paly was 14th.

The Viking girls lost Zoe Lusk, who is swimming for Duke this year but do have Mary Wilkinson, Peyton Wang, Chesnie Cheung, Katie Milne and Amy Lu among their returners.

Gunn returns some of its top swimmers in Milan Hilde-Jones, Grace Tramack, Clara Schultz and Melanie Julia.

Senior Sarah Snyder finished third in the 200 free at last year’s CCS meet while Tramack was seventh. Gunn’s Ashley Stahmer was fifth in the 50 free last year.

Kate Mallery and Cooper McKenna also helped the Titans at CCS.

The Gunn boys will be led by Cyril Wang, Shogo Moridaira, Theo Makler and Sebastian Cai while Paly has a solid group back, including Jack Hogan, Justin Cheok, Justin Packard and Matthew Clark.

Jonathan Affeld returns after placing fifth in the 200 free and second in the 500 free at the CCS meet. Jerry Yang and Kenji Zaharchuk are other Gunn swimmers to watch.

Sacred Heart Prep hosts the Small Schools Invitational on Saturday, an all-day affair. The Gators had a young girls team last year, returning swimmers like Sloane Reinstein, Gavy Ma, Annaliese Chen, Megan Ross and Ola Szczerba.

Castilleja’s Marie Williams placed seventh in the 200 individual medley at CCS last year.
