Along with April showers and May flowers, school funding can now be counted as a sign of spring. To raise money for Palo Alto’s 17 public schools, nonprofit Partners in Education is hosting a “Spring Fling” fundraiser with local businesses tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22.

Pizza parlors, ice-cream shops, nail salons and a maternity-wear store are among merchants who will donate 20 percent of sales to the nonprofit.

The nonprofit gave the school district $2.3 million last month, of which about 95 percent will fund teachers’ salaries, Executive Director Muneerah Merchant said.

That includes elective teachers in non-core subjects, those offering homework help or tech tutoring, and teachers’ aides, she said.

And thanks to money from Partners in Education, some district programs may not have to cut back on services, despite state budget cuts that will cost $890,000 in the coming fiscal year starting in June, Co-chief Business Official Cathy Mak said last month.

  1. And, since this is earth day and we are all being encouraged to bike everywhere, I hope to see families out on their bikes doing their spring fling shopping. I expect to see those having their nails done, come out and get on their bikes along with all those expectant mothers also getting on their three wheeler trikes.

The schools different committees should talk to each other about planning as this one is quite hilarious.

  2. What is wrong with biking to get an ice-cream or dine out?

Make bicycling part of your daily routine, instead of once a year on Earth Day. Palo Alto is mostly flat so a one-speed cruiser works just fine.

The benefits are plenty: feeling healthy, lower body fat and a more cheerful attitude when you get to work. We use an old trailer for running errands.

Daily bicycling is much cheaper than the gym and therapy, helps the environment, and sets an example for your kids!

I agree 100% with your comments and if we were talking about a weekend event, I feel sure that this could be done. Unfortunately, we are talking about a midweek evening and for many families, with after school sports and other activities, and the time parents eventually get home from work, going for a bike ride to dinner is not on as it takes up too much time. A late night trip to get ice cream after homework and before bed, or a quick trip to get takeout pre-ordered pizza is what many families can manage, and how do you take home pizza on a bicycle?

Maybe we can do our daily routine on our bikes and plan fun biking events for weekends when there is more time, but a busy weekday evening, it is just something else to squeeze into an ordinary time packed weekday before getting the kids to bed on time.
