Pinewood hit consecutive 3-pointers to open the second quarter and never trailed again in avenging its only loss of the season and earning a trip to the Central Coast Section Open Division girls basketball final.
Pinewood went on the road to topple second-seeded St. Ignatius 61-42 on Wednesday.
No. 3 Pinewood (22-1) meets No. 1 Mitty (26-1) in a rematch of last year’s Open Division championship game, won by Pinewood.
Pinewood lost to SI at home on Dec. 11, 59-54, its third game of the season.
No. 7 Palo Alto earned its first-ever girls Open Division victory, going on the road to beat Sacred Heart Cathedral 47-43.
St. Francis also won its final Open Division contest, topping Half Moon Bay 51-21. The Lancers led 15-3 after the first quarter.
In the boys Open Division, St. Francis fell to Bellarmine, 54-42.
All 16 of the girls and boys CCS Open Division basketball teams automatically advance into the CIF state NorCal tournament.
Central Coast Section Soccer
Boys
Menlo-Atherton advanced into the Division II championship match, getting past Mountain View 1-1 (4-2 on penalties kick).
Noah DeHaaff, Toivo Zahir and Caden Annison led the strong effort for the Bears.
Bryan Kim was a standout for Mountain View.
M-A plays at Sacred Heart Prep at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Sacred Heart Prep advanced with a 3-1 victory over Hillsdale.
In Division III, No. 8 Woodside advanced to the title match, beating No. 5 Prospect 1-0.
The Wildcats scored on a rebound off the Prospect goalie just before halftime.
Alexis Cardenas, Adrian Ruiz, Diego Ruiz and Benny Bogyo were among the stars for Woodside, which meets host No. 2 Mitty at 11 a.m. Saturday for the championship.
Sequoia edged Seaside 2-1 to reach the Division IV championship match. Jose Barragan scored the game’s first goal for the No. 2 Ravens, who travel to No. 1 King City, the southernmost school in the CCS, for a 3 p.m. showdown Saturday.
Girls
Los Altos scored the first three goals of its match with Carlmont en route to a 3-1 victory and a spot in the Division I finals at 6 p.m. Saturday against host Santa Cruz.
Lauren Han was part of a strong defensive effort for the Eagles, who have nine wins and a tie over their past 11 matches after starting the season 4-5-1.
In Division II, Menlo dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime to host Christopher.
Freshman Roya Rezaee put the Knights ahead 1-0 after taking a pass from Colby Wilson. Rezaee also filled in as goalie following a victory.
Sacred Heart Prep also dropped a heartbreaker, tying the game at 3-3 with a goal in the second overtime and then going down on penalty kicks, 5-4, to Piedmont Hills.
