Stanford junior Kelsey Murray earned Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday. Murray was selected after helping the ninth-ranked Cardinal win three matches. The honor is the second of Murray’s career, and first this season.
Murray went on a tear last week, converting over 94 percent of her shot attempts in a pair of conference matches. She scored 12 goals and added six assists in addition to winning four ground balls.
Against Cal, Murray scored five goals and added two assists. She added three more goals and two assists in Stanford’s win over Fresno State. Murray completed the week with four goals and two assists in Stanford’s victory over UC Davis.
Murray and the Cardinal concludes the MPSF regular-season with a showdown at USC and another match at San Diego State.
Stanford and the Trojans are the lone unbeaten teams remaining in the conference. The match is set for Friday at 4 p.m. in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and will be aired on Pac-12 Networks.
Men’s basketball
Stanford has hired Jesse Pruitt as an assistant coach for the Cardinal, completing new head coach Jerod Haase’s staff.
A well-regarded coach with strong California ties, Pruitt most recently spent eight seasons on the staff at Santa Clara under head coach Kerry Keating.
Pruitt served as an assistant coach for the Broncos the last four seasons, where he helped lead Santa Clara to the 2013 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) postseason tournament title. Two years prior, the Broncos won the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Championship.
Pruitt’s main responsibilities at Santa Clara involved recruiting, player development and scouting.
Before joining Santa Clara, Pruitt was an assistant at Division II powerhouse Cal Poly Pomona under Greg Kamansky from 2006-08. There, Pruitt was instrumental in the recruiting efforts that led to back-to-back national title game appearances (2009 and 2010) and a national championship in 2010.
Men’s swimming
Twenty one Cardinal student-athletes earned academic recognition from the Pac-12 Conference last week.
Stanford placed seven student-athletes on the first team, tied with Utah for the most of any program. Stanford added six more second-team selections to go along with eight honorable mentions.
Senior Ryan Arata, a mechanical engineering major, had a league-best 4.03 grade-point average. Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Student-Athlete of the Year Gray Umbach posted a 3.99 grade-point average in chemical engineering.
To be eligible for selection to the Pac-12 All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and participate in at least half of his team’s scheduled regular-season events.
