A trio of freshmen led the Stanford baseball team past visiting Kansas, 6-2, Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the nonconference series at Sunken Diamond.
Freshmen Brandon Wulff, Nico Hoerner and Duke Kinamon combined for six of Stanford’s eight hits, including two milestone home runs, and all five of the team’s RBI.
Stanford (10-5) continues play Monday at 2 p.m. when it travels to UC Davis.
Sophomore Andrew Summerville was called in from the bullpen in the second inning and proceeded to shut down the Jayhawks. After the first two men reached in the third, Summerville retired 10 in a row and did not allow another hit until the seventh.
A hit batter, walk and sacrifice bunt set up Hoerner’s go-ahead, two-RBI single in the bottom of the third. The rookie later scored on a single to left by Wulff, and Stanford led 3-1.
Wulff tacked on another run in the sixth with his first career home run, and Kinamon duplicated that milestone with his first round-tripper in the seventh. Both were solo shots to left field, with Kinamon’s shot traveling over the trees beyond the fence.
Kansas had closed to within 4-2 before Kinamon’s seventh-inning blast. The Cardinal tacked on an insurance run later that frame, and Colton Hock and Chris Viall each pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
Women’s water polo
Shannon Cleary, Katie Dudley, Dani Jackovich and Jordan Raney each scored twice and No. 3 Stanford returned from an extended finals break to beat host No. 10 UC San Diego, 11-5, in a nonconference match Sunday.
Julia Hermann faced 28 total shots, 16 on frame and made 11 saves, her fifth game in double figures this season.
The Cardinal (14-2) returns on action at noon on Tuesday when it plays at No. 13 UC Santa Barbara
Stanford went 5-of-6 on the power play.
Lacrosse
Lucy Dikeou and Alex Poplawski each scored four goals and an all-around dominant team performance led No. 14 Stanford to a 16-10 win over visiting No. 8 Penn State Sunday afternoon at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
The Cardinal (5-1) wasted no time out of the starting gate as Lucy Dikeou won one of her six draw controls on the day and took only 54 seconds off the clock before depositing goal number 12 of the season into the net. Less than a minute later, Kelsey Murray followed suit for her 13th goal of the year. PSU fired back with two goals of their own to tie it 2-2.
Stanford kept the pressure up in the half, winning 11 of the 20 draw controls while forcing eight turnovers and scrapping for eight ground balls to keep ahead of the Nittany Lions.
Dikeou scored all four of her goals in the first half, while Kelly Myers showcased her status as a factotum with two goals, five draw controls and a caused turnover on the day as Stanford held a 12-7 lead at the break.
Penn State (7-2) came out to score the first goal of the second half, but it was all Stanford after that with the Cardinal winning six of the seven draw controls, and forcing five more turnovers. Allie DaCar was phenomenal in the half with seven saves on 16 shots by Penn State.
The Cardinal also scored four unanswered goals, with Alex Poplawski going back-to-back to pull her total to four on the day, while DaCar and the defense held PSU to 3-for-9 in free position shots to close out the win.
The Cardinal will hit the road this week as they set to travel to Johns Hopkins on Wednesday. Game time is set for 3 p.m. PT and will be aired live on ESPNU.
Women’s tennis
Sunday’s match between host No. 17 Stanford and No. 21 Clemson was cancelled due to rain.
Three separate rain delays halted the completion of doubles play, which began at noon. At the final stopping point, Stanford was leading 5-3 at the No. 1 spot but trailing 5-4 at No. 2 and 4-3 at No. 3.
The match was called five hours later.
Stanford (7-3, 2-1 Pac-12) next hosts No. 5 Pepperdine on Monday and the match has been moved up two hours to noon with rain expected in the forecast.
Sailing
Stanford crews finished first, second, third and fifth at the North Gold Regatta held in Redwood City over the weekend.
At the St. Mary’s Intercollegiate in Maryland, Stanford finished fourth with 300 points. Rhode Island won with 219.
At the 16-team Graham Hall Race, Stanford went 14-6 and placed third behind Georgetown (18-2) and Yale (17-3). Cardinal skippers were Axel Sly, Antoine Screve and Will La Dow, aided by crew members John Cannistraro, Samantha Steele and Sarah Lucas.
