Breanna Turner and Aaliyah Sowards each scored 14 points and the Menlo College women’s basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat visiting Hope International, 81-73, in a Golden State Athletic Conference contest Thursday night.
Vanessa D’Amico and Anisah Smith each added 12 points for the Oaks (10-12, 3-6 GSAC), who snapped a three-game losing streak with their fourth win in the past five home games. Fia Hoskinson had 11 points.
Menlo hosts Arizona Christian at 1 p.m. Saturday in a GSAC game. The Oaks beat the Firestrom, 71-67, three weeks ago in Phoenix.
The Royals led by 10 late in the second quarter and took a 37-31 lead into halftime.
Trailing by five with 5:33 left in the third quarter, the Oaks went on a 15-5 run the rest of the way to pull ahead. Smith hit a 3-pointer with 2:49 left in the period to give Menlo its first lead.
Hope International rallied to take a 61-58 advantage with 6:23 remaining to play. D’Amico responded with a layup and 3-pointer to help the Oaks regain the lead for good.
Menlo out-rebounded the Royals, 38-26, with Turner grabbing a game-high nine boards. Emma Briggs added eight rebounds to go with nine points.
Men’s basketball
Ryan Wilson scored 11 points, though Menlo failed to generate enough offense to compete with visiting No. 7 Hope International, losing to the Royals, 87-63, in a Golden State Athletic Conference contest Thursday night.
Rosendo AmayaWood and Adam Griffin each added 10 points for the Oaks (8-14, 2-7 GSAC), who lost their eighth in nine games.
Conference-leading Hope International scored the game’s first eight points and was up, 14-4, less than three minutes in.
The Oaks responded with an 11-2 run to pull within 16-15 with 13:36 remaining in the first half. Wilson hit a 3-pointer about a minute later to tie the game at 18.
The Royals edged ahead to stay, though Kalen Camero hit a pair of free throws with just over seven minutes left in the half to make it 29-26.
Hope International scored the next 10 points before Adam Griffith scored but then the Royals nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 47-32 advantage into halftime.
Menlo hosts No. 10 Arizona Christian in a GSAC contest at 3 p.m. Saturday.
