Stanford men’s golfer Cameron Wilson sank eight birdies in the span of 10 holes midway through his second round of the Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course in Hawaii.
Wilson finished with a 7-under 65 to take over first place heading into Sunday’s final round.
Wilson was 4-under through his first eight holes on the par-72 course, beginning on the 11th and shelving birdies on 14, 15, 16 and 18.
He also birdied two, three, four and five before a bogey on sixth proved to be his only blemish. Wilson has played the back nine at 12-under through two rounds.
Stanford is tied for 10th, nine strokes behind leader Oklahoma State, which leads the 20-team field at 28-under.
Patrick Rodgers’ 2-under 70 came with seven birdies and an up-and-down back half of the day. Rodgers is tied for 25th.
David Boote took five shots off of his opening-round with a 2-under 70, including an eagle on the par-5 fourth.
Softball
Cassandra Roulund drove in four runs on three hits, including a home run and double, and Stanford stopped San Diego State, 13-1, in a 5-inning contest at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe on Friday.
The Cardinal scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and beat Northwestern, 4-3, in the second game of the day.
Stanford (3-0) plays Indiana and Western Michigan on Saturday and completes its first weekend of play against Seattle on Sunday.
Against the Aztecs, Madi Schreyer allowed a run on two hits over four innings to earn her first collegiate win. She struck out six and walked one.
Kylie Sorenson drove in three runs on two hits, while Leah White had three hits and drove in two. Lauren Bertoy also drove in a pair.
Men’s swimming
David Nolan and Gary Umbach each won two individual events and Stanford topped host UC Santa Barbara, 108-91, in a nonconference meet Friday.
The Cardinal (6-0) travels to USC for a Pac-12 meet Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
Men’s volleyball
Brian Cook recorded a team-high eight kills, with a .571 hitting percentage, as Stanford toppled visiting UC San Diego, 25-14, 25-16, 25-16, Friday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.
The Cardinal (3-4, 6-4) hosts defending national champions UC Irvine at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
