Felicia Lee and Andie Taylor took over the spotlight, each recording a pair of individual wins, to help the fourth-ranked Stanford women’s swim team down host UCLA, 180-120, in a Pac-12 Conference meet Friday.
Maya DiRado, Katie Olsen and Maddy Schaefer also won races for the Cardinal (5-0 against the Pac-12, 8-0 overall), which travels to USC for a noon meet Saturday.
The meet, carried live on the Pac-12 Networks, had a championship feel to it.
“The intensity in which we are racing,” Stanford coach Greg Meehan said of what he was most impressed. “This time of year it’s a little less about the times we are posting and much more about how we are racing through some fatigue and trying to stick with some details of our racing.”
Taylor won both the distance events, outdoing UCLA’s Lauren Baker. She started the day with a 9:50.44 in the 1,000 free and completed the difficult double with a 4:50.62 in the 500 free, three seconds ahead of the field.
“It’s just about executing the race plan,” said Taylor. “I think I swam pretty well. I felt like I was able to have something at the end to finish off, so I’m happy with it.”
Lee was first in the 100 back (53.35) and the 200 IM (2:00.42) and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team, which also included Annemarie Thayer, Katie Olsen and Maddy Schaefer.
Olsen won the 100 breast (1:01.19) and Schaefer zipped through the water in the 50 free (22.85), an event for which she holds the nation’s best time. DiRado won the 200 fly (1:57.77).
Schaefer also swam a leg of the 400 free relay, with Lia Neal, Julia Ama and Julia Anderson, which won by 0.07 seconds in the meet’s final event.
Stanford moved to 30-3 all-time against the Bruins.
Women’s tennis
Top-ranked Stanford bested host No. 17 Texas, 6-1, in Austin Friday to remain unbeaten in the early going.
The Cardinal (3-0) travels to Houston Saturday for a 10 a.m. match against No. 22 Rice.
Stanford won the doubles point and Ellen Tsay provided the clincher for the third consecutive match.
Leading 1-0 in its first road match of the year, Stanford extended its lead to 2-0 following a 6-2, 6-0 victory from Krista Hardebeck at the No. 2 spot.
Carol Zhao followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court three just before Tsay secured the dual with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at the No. 5 position over Pippa Horn.
The Longhorns (3-1) received their only point when Ratnika Batra came through with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 4 position.
Men’s volleyball
No. 7 Stanford let a two-set lead slip away, falling to visiting Long Beach State, 17-25, 25-27, 25-18, 25-18, 15-11, Friday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.
Brian Cook had 15 kills and 12 digs, Steven Irvin added 11 kills and 11 digs and James Shaw recorded 44 assists and 12 digs.
The Cardinal (1-4 in the MPSF, 4-4 overall) host Cal State Northridge in Maples Pavilion at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Grant Delgado led Stanford with 18 digs.
