Another school-based computer theft, this time 30 laptops valued at $31,000 at Hillview Middle School, occurred Friday (Nov. 25), a Menlo Park Police Department spokeswoman said. Officers converged on the school at the intersection of Elder and Santa Cruz avenues after a burglar alarm went off at 4:34 a.m., police said.

Other such multiple-computer thefts this year include 31 computers in June from Portola Valley elementary and middle schools, 10 in July from the Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley, and several in August from Encinal Elementary School in Atherton, according to crime reports.

In the Hillview incident, the thief used a pry bar to forcibly enter a locked computer lab, police said. Police searched the grounds with the assistance of a police dog from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, but found no suspects.

The investigation is continuing, police said.
