Stanford’s 18A boys water polo team won another two games at the USAWP National Junior Olympics on Sunday to advance into Monday’s quarterfinal round. Brandon Johnson coached the team to a national runner-up finish last year.

The 18As edged Del Mar A 7-6 in the morning and then beat the San Jose Water Polo Foundation 10-7 later in the day at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine. Stanford meets Newport Beach at 1 p.m. Monday at Foothill High.

Stanford’s 16A boys beat LA Premier 11-8, also in Irvine, to remain in contention for a medal with a trio of Menlo School players providing significant contributions.

Sophomore Greg Hilderbrand and junior Connor MacMitchell scored a combined seven goals in the match and senior Josh Poulos earned the win with his play in the net.

Menlo-Atherton’s Michael Heller added two goals and the seven Sacred Heart Prep players were also instrumental. Isaac Rotenberg, one of seven Sacred Heart Prep players on the roster, and Charles Connor also scored.

MacMitchell scored twice late in the third period to give Stanford a 9-7 edge heading into the final period. The 16A defense held, with MacMitchell and Heller each scoring to finish it off.

Hilderbrand gave Stanford a 2-0 lead and then made it 3-2 in the first period. Heller gave Stanford a 7-5 halftime lead.

The 16As were nudged by the Shore Aquatics Red A 7-6 in the late game and will play the Redlands Renegades at 1 p.m. at Westminster High in a classification game.

The 16Bs split its two games, beating NIPC 13-4 and losing to La Jolla A, 12-2. They play South Valley at 10 a.m. Monday at Cypress College with a chance to finish as high as fifth.

The 18B boys also split two games, beating the Redlands Renegades 12-8 and losing to Foothill Red A -6. They next play Monday against OC Riptide at Chapman University at 10 a.m. with a chance to finish as high as fifth.

The 14Bs lost twice, 12-9 to San Jose Alamden and 16-8 to Tustin Patriot, in group play and then came back to beat Davis 9-4. They play Del Mar B at JSerra High at 8 a.m. with a chance at fifth place.

The 14As lost to PV Red A 10-4 and then rebounded with an 8-6 victory over Arroyo Grande A. They will play San Diego Shores on Monday at Mater Dei High at 1 p.m.

The 14Cs won twice Sunday in the Classic Division, beating San Jose Almaden 17-9 and Arroyo Grande B 12-7. They won a play-in game against Puget Sound 9-6 and will play SHAQ Blue B at 9 a.m. at JSerra High with a chance at fifth.

The 12As lost twice, 10-3 to Pride and 14-12 to Northwood. They also dropped a 10-6 decision to Foothill Red A and will play Commerce at 9:40 a.m. at Portola High on Monday.

The 12Bs split two games Sunday, losing to Shore Aquatics 17-6 and coming back to beat Foothill Black B 13-12. They play again Monday at 8 a.m. against Admiral at El Toro High.
