Palo Alto, California

Submitted by Melinda Sacks

Eve R. “Dolly” Sacks died on June 8th. She was 98.

Throughout her life, Dolly (a nickname given to her when she was a baby) worked to help others, first as a social worker in Massachusetts, where she grew up, and later as executive director of the Stanford Urban Coalition on the Stanford campus, and then a senior program officer at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation in Los Altos. There she was instrumental in creating the Black Colleges Program and numerous other programs addressing education inequity and childhood poverty.

Dolly loved German Shepherds (she had one until she was nearly 90), graham crackers with peanut butter, reading and discussing the headlines and op-eds from her beloved New York Times. Most of all she loved her family. She was always ready to open her home to others from visiting international students to struggling relatives to troubled teens. Her house was a gathering spot for her large, extended family. She was thoughtful, fun and feisty. She loved going for tea in downtown Palo Alto and she adored Italian opera.

Dolly was known for her granola chocolate chip cookies and matzoh ball soup at Passover, her favorite holiday.

Dolly is survived by her husband of 73 years, Alvin Sacks, her four children, Richard, Melinda, Randy and Barry, and grandchildren Collin and Katie Sacks, Kelsey and Alex Jessup, and Elliot and Carly Pearl-Sacks. She has three great grandchildren.
