Stanford men, women post soccer sweeps

The Stanford men's and women's soccer programs took big steps toward winning seasons by sweeping opponents last weekend.

The Cardinal men, who play host to San Jose State on Wednesday at 2 p.m., used a hat trick by sophomore Jamie Clark in Sunday's 3-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara.

Clark's second goal on a penalty kick clinched the victory. The win, coupled with a 2-1 triumph over UC Irvine on Friday, pushed Stanford to 7-4-4 overall with three regular-season matches remaining.

A hat trick by another sophomore also was the highlight in Sunday's women's match, a 3-1 Stanford win. Tracye Lawyer booted home all three goals as she recorded her first career hat trick. The first two goals came off assists from senior Erin Martin.

Coupled with Friday's 1-0 overtime win over Washington State on a goal by Menlo Park's Emily Burt, Stanford heads into this weekend's trip to Los Angeles with a 4-0 Pacific-10 Conference record (9-7 overall).

A sweep of USC and UCLA virtually will lock up Stanford's second straight Pac-10 crown.
