OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Menlo School sophomore Alyssa Robinson and Palo Alto junior Jenny Reese both had solid diving efforts at last weekend's International CAMO Invitational in Montreal, Canada. Robinson, from Menlo Park, placed fifth on the 1-meter board in the girls' 16-18 division, and 14th in the 3-meter competition. Reese finished 13th on 1-meter and 21st on 3-meter in the same age group. Both were competing against some of the world's top young divers from Canada, USA, Mexico, Cuba, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Colombia and Bermuda. Both girls are members of the Stanford Junior Olympic Diving team and are coached by Dr. Richard Schavone, head coach of the Stanford men's and women's diving teams . . . Recent Gunn grad Jennifer Wang has been named to the 2005 All-Centennial Conference first team in volleyball for her outstanding season at Swarthmore College. Wang, a freshman, led Swarthmore with 301 kills this season.

NEW COACH . . . Gunn High will have a new head football coach in 2006, with current Athletic Director Matt McGinn taking charge. McGinn will be taking over from Sam Picture, who is stepping down to spend more time with his family. Picture was one of the most successful coaches in Gunn history. In 2002 he led the Titans to their most successful season in 30 years when Gunn went 8-4 and advanced to the Central Coast Section semifinals. A main part of the success Gunn enjoyed was due to the year-round conditioning emphasized by Picture. McGinn came to Gunn in the fall of 2002 with the idea that he would one day be the varsity coach. He was an outstanding athlete at Capuchino High, where he was a standout in football and wrestling. After graduating from Capuchino in 1989, he went on to play at College of San Mateo and then was a two-year starter on the offensive line at the University of the Pacific. Upon graduation of UOP, he was a grad assistant at his alma mater and then went on to coach at Terra Nova and Galt highs, before he came to Gunn.
