VEGGIES IN POTS . . . Master Gardener Bekah Stratton, with Susan Zaslaw, will offer a free gardening workshop on seasonal vegetable plots and vegetables in pots tomorrow, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Gamble Garden Center, Main House Library, 1431 Waverley St., Palo Alto. The workshop will include seed-starting techniques -- including a hands-on demonstration of planting carrot strips -- and information on lighting, watering and transplanting. BUILDING GREEN . . . For those interested in incorporating "green" practices in remodeling, Form + Function, a Mountain View-based construction company, is offering a free seminar on Building Green, Saturday, Aug. 20, 1 p.m. at The Vox Design Group, 421 Castro St., Mountain View. Topics will include energy-efficient practices that pay for themselves, integrating water features in landscaping, maximizing fresh air and reducing chemicals, and a look at sustainable building products that won't break the budget. IT'S COUNTY FAIR TIME . . . The San Mateo County Fair opens today at the San Mateo County Expo Center, 2495 Delaware St., San Mateo, and continues through Aug. 21. In addition to the carnival, wine pavilion (on weekends), rock and roll art show, pig races and outdoor movies, the fair offers quilt displays, baked goods, photography plus floral arts and agriculture exhibits. Tickets are $9 general, $7 seniors (62 and over), $7 juniors (ages 6-12), free on Aug. 18 before 3 p.m. Hours are 4 to 11 p.m. today, noon to 11 p.m. Aug. 13 and 20, noon to 10 p.m. all other days.
