Weekly publisher reacts to Daily News sale Weekly publisher reacts to Daily News sale (February 18, 2005)

Palo Alto Weekly Publisher Bill Johnson said the sale of the Daily News chain "should be great news" from a readers' standpoint.

"Peninsula residents have every reason to be optimistic that Knight Ridder will transform the Daily News into a responsible and respectable daily newspaper with a continuing strong local focus. We all welcome such a change.

"From a business perspective and like other newspaper chains across the country, Knight-Ridder is trying to figure out how to deal with declining readership, declining ad revenue, increasing use of the Internet, and the challenges of covering local news in dozens of cities.

"The purchase of the Daily news will help Knight-Ridder determine if a free daily newspaper model with a focus on covering smaller communities can work, especially in the same market as one of its own paid dailies. It will be particularly interesting to see how the Daily News and the San Jose Mercury go about covering the same local news stories.

"As for the Palo Alto Weekly and our two other community weeklies on the Peninsula, the Menlo Park Almanac and the Mountain View Voice, we will continue to do what we do best -- providing high quality, insightful and in-depth coverage of our communities and the most efficient way for local businesses to get their advertising messages to residents."
