OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Gunn High freshman Shiv Kachru, 14, took second place out of 32 competitors in the boys' foil at the All-State High School Invitational Fencing Tournament last weekend at Lowell High in San Francisco. In the girls' competition, Zitin Kachru, 16, a junior at Gunn, finished fifth while Castilleja freshman Kersten Schnurle, 14, was eighth. The top fencers from the San Francisco High School District competed along with those from Woodland Hills, San Fernando Valley and Palo Alto. The Palo Alto fencers are coached by Connie Yu . . . Castilleja graduate Jackie Nguyen cleared a personal best of 13 feet, 2 1/4 inches and scored a point in the women's pole vault for the first-place UCLA women's track team at last weekend's Pac-10 Championships in Tucson, Ariz. Nguyen cleared the same height as the fifth-place finisher, but took eighth based on more misses . . . The USPTA's Tennis Across America will offer a free clinic for juniors at 3 p.m. and for adults (4:30-6 p.m.) at Alpine Hills Tennis and Swim Club in Portola Valley on Saturday. There will be a full afternoon of tennis and prizes . . . Menlo School will host the Special Olympics Northern California San Mateo County Track & Field Competition for the 13th consecutive year. The event takes place on Saturday at Cartan Field on the Menlo School campus. Activities begin at 9 a.m. with opening ceremonies and the lighting of the Olympic torch. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.

YOUTH SOCCER . . . The Stanford Soccer Club Avalanche, an Under-15 girls' AYSO team, won the Concord Cup Class 3 Under-16 division championship last weekend. The Avalanche beat the MDSL Fusion, 3-1, on two goals by Kaitlin McGhee and one by Emma McCarthy. For the tournament, the Avalance outscored its competition, 20-3. In the boys' Under-14 division the Palo Alto-based Blaze captured its division championship . . . The Stanford Earthquakes U-15 CYSA boys' team will be having tryouts for the upcoming season on May 24, 26 and 27. Experienced players are welcome to try out. Contact Brad at 858-2076 or at . . . The Stanford JV boys' Under 12/13 Class I CYSA team invites players for the team's final practice today. The team is looking for a goalie and 1-2 strong field players. BANK OF THE WEST . . . Individual tickets for the Bank of the West Classic are now on sale. The Classic, a WTA Tour Tier II event, will be held July 12-18 at the Taube Tennis Stadium on Stanford's campus. Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and Lindsay Davenport have all committed early to compete at Stanford. The trio represent the past six championships in event, with Clijsters the defending champion. She also won in 2001, while Williams won the title in 2000 and 2002 and Davenport won in 1998 and 1999. Williams missed last year's tournament with a strained abdominal muscle. Tickets are priced between $10-$80 per session and are available through City Box Office at 1-415-392-4400 or through at (650) 478-2277. Day sessions Monday through Thursday begin at 10 a.m. and Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. Evening sessions begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturday at 8 p.m. Sunday's final is scheduled for 1 p.m.
