Striking similarities between Weekly, Merc stories Striking similarities between Weekly, Merc stories (April 23, 2003)

The Weekly couldn't help but notice a familiar looking item in the April 16 edition of the San Jose Mercury News. Here's the Weekly story, written by reporter Bill D'Agostino, that was posted online on Tuesday April 15:

After more than two months of being closed, the Palo Alto Elks Club on El Camino Real reopened its building last Friday, allowing members to once again make use of the bar, swimming pools, billiards room and pistol range inside.

"It's just such a wonderful site to see," said newly elected Exalter Ruler Rod Norville, who defeated former Exalter Ruler Harry "Buzz" Pier in a recent club election.

In late January, the Elks Club Grand Lodge -- which oversees the local chapter -- ordered the club to close because of a "deteriorating fiscal situation," Norville said. But Palo Alto Elks drafted a new, balanced budget, which the grand lodge approved, paving the way for the reopen.

The announcement of the reopening was made at a lodge meeting last Thursday night to the applause of the members who were present.

Elks spent the weekend repainting and doing work on the building and a party is being planned to celebrate, Norville noted.

Meanwhile, the Elks are continuing to move forward on the sale of its eight-acre property. A request for proposals will be sent out in the next few weeks, Norville said.

Here is the Mercury News' version, printed in the paper the next day:

The Elks are back in business. After being ordered to shut down in late January, the Palo Alto Elks Club on El Camino Real has reopened its doors to let in members to use the bar, swimming pools, billiards room and pistol range inside, said newly elected Exalted Ruler Rod Norville.

The Elks Club Grand Lodge -- which oversees the local chapter -- ordered the club to close because of its deteriorating fiscal situation. But Palo Alto Elks drafted a new, balanced budget, which the grand lodge approved, paving the way for the reopening Friday.
