HONOR FOR POWELL . . . Stanford junior basketball standout Nicole Powell was named to the NCAA Division I Kodak All-American Team for the second straight season. Powell is the fourth two-time Kodak All-American in Stanford women's basketball history, joining Jennifer Azzi (1989-90), Val Whiting (1992-93) and Kate Starbird (1996-97). Powell averaged 18.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game as she led the Cardinal to its third straight Pac-10 regular season title, first Pac-10 Tournament title and 16th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Powell was also named a second-team Associated Press All-American for the second time in as many seasons.

CARDINAL CORNER . . .
The Cardinal softball team won once in three Pac-10 meetings over the weekend. Both losses were in extra innings. The Cardinal (2-4, 28-14) lost to Oregon, 3-2 in 10 innings on Friday, then dropped a 15-5 decision to Oregon State on Saturday before beating the Beavers, 10-1, on Sunday. The Cardinal host Cal Poly on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader. Stanford used 11 hits in five innings to beat Oregon State and end its three-game losing streak. Lauren Lappin and Cassi Brangham each drove in three runs while Kira Ching drove in two runs, including one on a squeeze bunt. Dana Sorensen (13-5) allowed three hits and struck out three in five innings of work . . . The Stanford women's golf team shot a 302 in the final round of the ASU/PING Invitational in Tempe on Sunday to finish tied for ninth overall with a three-day score of 911. California won the title by one stroke with an 876 over Texas. Junior Kim Kouwabunpat led Stanford, tying for ninth with a 4-over par 220, after firing a par 72 on the final day.

OF LOCAL NOTE . . . The first Palo Alto Alumni/George Sandborn Memorial Baseball Game will be held Saturday at Palo Alto High beginning at noon. Former professional players and Paly grads Tony Brewer and Stu Pederson will be among the alumni playing. All former Paly players are welcome for the game, which will be followed by a barbeque. Palo Alto High senior basketball standout Ryan Symes established a school record for overall season average with a 23.13 points-per-game mark. That broke the previous record of 22.54 ppg set by Ron Wyden in 1967. Wyden still owns the single-season league scoring average of 25.50 ppg, as Symes averaged 24 ppg this season in the SCVAL De Anza Division, according to stats compile by team historian Ken White.

COACHES NEEDED . . .
Sacred Heart Prep is looking for the following coaches for the fall of 2003: assistant varsity football coaches, JV head football coach, JV and freshman water polo coaches, boys' freshman soccer coach, and varsity girls' cross-country coach. SOCCER NEWS . . . A Palo Alto Soccer Club Class III Under-10 boys' team is looking for players for spring and fall. The Palo Alto Soccer Club has formed a new Class I CYSA boys' team, Blue 90, for players born after July 31, 1990.
