GIRLS' TENNIS

Paly girls net more victories Paly girls net more victories (September 27, 2002)

Considering that the one loss suffered by the Palo Alto High girls' tennis team came this week to defending Central Coast Section and NorCal champion Menlo, the Vikings are doing just fine.

The Vikings (7-1) bounced back from that 5-2 nonleague loss to Menlo on Monday and defeated Homestead, 7-0, on Tuesday and then Pinewood, 6-1, Wednesday.

While Pinewood defaulted at No. 1 singles because Lejla Hodzic was absent, Palo Alto nonetheless handily downed last year's CCS and NorCal runnerup team.

Tessa Hollyn-Taub posted a three-set win at No. 3 singles while freshman Austinn Freeman continued to shine for the Vikings with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 4.

As usual, the Vikings swept the doubles --- in straight sets --- behind the tandems of Jossy Tseng-Dory Gannes, Kate Cooper-Elaine Strauss and Fenja Blobel-Julia Rotow.

In beating Homestead, Paly swept in straight sets.

Paly did put up a good fight against Menlo (9-2), but Knights' coach Bill Shine had his team ready - despite the fact the Monday match came on the heals of a long weekend, during which the Knights won the annual Santa Catalina Invitational.

"To go over to Paly on a Monday after a long weekend and beat them said a lot," Shine said. "The match was really closer than the score indicated. It could have gone 4-3 either way."

Shine said the key was taking two of three doubles matches from the Vikings.

"Paly is know for its doubles," Shine said. "So I challenged our doubles. They stepped up to the challenge."

Elsewhere, Menlo-Atherton (2-2) got a thrilling three-set win from Shelly Murveit at No. 3 singles to pull out a 4-3 PAL Bay Division win over visiting Aragon.
