Iran is a mess. The mullahs in charge of the place are religious fanatics, the current President is a megalomaniac, their oil rich economy has been mis-managed to a shamble, the people cannot stand the regime. The world has little or no sympathy for those in charge in Iran, thanks to its rhetoric on Israel, its irritating rabble rousing of Shiite factions in the Iraq debacle, and their attempts to develop nuclear capabilities.
Thankfully, going nuclear is neither an easy or a quickly achieved accomplishment, and these guys, even if they knew what they were doing, are still a long ways away from coming even close to being able to make a nuclear device--peaceful or otherwise--let alone actually having a reactor or a weapon.
That said, the Shrub Administration, ne Cheney, appear hell bent to attack the country before they leave office. Even if such an action were indicated due to a clear and present danger (and that is not the case), these are not the people who should be doing anything at all in the next 14 months to further undermine the United States' position in the world, to put this country at long term risk through further weakening our military resources and depleting our government treasure.
They have demonstrated time and time again that they are not "go to guys" for this country, and it was a serious mistake that they were voted into office (and even that remains questionable.) The federal deficit, the declining dollar, the shaky housing market, the poor response via FEMA and vetos of bills when infrastructure in New Orleans and elsewhere have failed or is at serious risk of doing so, our relations and stature with other countries, our sorry moral leadership after torture of people detained and ousting career attorneys from the Justice Department for political reasons... need I go on?
These are not "go to guys" for anything with a track record like that. And they think that they need to exit the stage only after bombing Iran before they go?
