Two teenagers were injured Thursday when one of them accidentally discharged a firearm while he was in his parked truck at the Stanford Shopping Center parking lot.
One of the male teens shot himself in the hand, and the round then struck another occupant of the vehicle in the leg, according to the Palo Alto Police Department.
Police responded to an area hospital on Thursday, May 12, at 12:17 a.m. on a report of two people who had just arrived with gunshot wounds. The injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The teens initially reported they had been the victims of an armed robbery that had occurred about 30 minutes earlier at the Stanford Shopping Center parking lot, but police ultimately determined there had not been a robbery.
Police said the teens had been sitting in a truck smoking marijuana when one of them accidentally discharged a handgun.
They then drove themselves to the hospital for treatment.
Investigators located a bloodied handgun with no serial number under the driver’s seat of the truck.
Police said the case will be forwarded to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office for review and any applicable charges.

Shouldn’t the police investigates how the teens come into possession of the gun and what are their intentions of bringing the gun to Stanford Shopping Mall late at night?

Why do these teens have an unregistered ghost gun? And why were they not arrested for that?
Who parks in Stanford SC at this time of night? Isn’t it quite apparent that anyone sitting in a car is either sleeping there for the night or up to no good?
@eileen, they’re not arrested because they’re teens who committed a non violent offense under recent changes to the penal code. Yes, an accidental discharge is non violent. Voters and the community have also made it clear that they want a stop to the over policing of black and brown bodies. They need love and diversion, not incarceration.

Are the kids expected to go to counseling or some sort of program?
Otherwise, they will be back on the street tomorrow with their loaded guns.
@eileen I think I answered your sensible question in my previous comment. Pathologically compassionate local voters have ensured that teens are virtually untouchable by police.
If you want rational response to crime, to treat criminals as the threat to society they are along with law and order there’s many states in the Union that provide that. California is not one of them.
I think Public Safety should take priority over the coddling of teens out with guns (who shoot the gun off in public).
They should have had the ‘safety’ on but one should never trust a safety setting.
The basic rule, “treat every firearm as if it were loaded” aptly applies.
And of course…alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, crystal meth, heroin/fentynal, LSD and other substances do not mix well with firearms.
They should have been more careful and better yet, not been that position to begin with.
