I have read a great deal about this incident and am reminded of a similar incident on ECR and California in Palo Ato just as the pandemic started.
Please teach young children that the best way to cross a street on a bicycle is to dismount and wheel a bike, effectively becoming a pedestrian. At 12 and 13 years of age, children do not have the ability to see all the potentials of how they could be hurt. They do not always understand that the driver of a truck cannot see them. The children might be doing everything right, but they can be invisible to a driver in a big vehicle.
For the sake of safety, there are times and places that all bike riders should dismount and become pedestrians pushing their bikes.
