The latest on Stanford University’s proposed expansion plans will be the subject of a Town Hall meeting this Thursday at Palo Alto City Hall hosted by Joe Simitian, president of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, and the Palo Alto Weekly.
The university has applied for permission from the county to grow its campus by 2.275 million square feet of academic space, 550 units of housing and 2,600 student beds. Its application and the analysis of its potential impact on housing, traffic, the environment and more are now under review by the county.
In addition, Simitian and Supervisor Cindy Chavez are in negotiations with Stanford over a possible development agreement that could address a range of community needs and the university’s contributions to meet those needs.
Simitian — whose public service includes tenures as Palo Alto mayor, California state senator and California state assemblyman, and other roles — will provide an update on the review process, including a high-level overview of the staff-proposed conditions of approval.
He will be joined in a discussion by Palo Alto Weekly Editor Jocelyn Dong and city hall reporter Gennady Sheyner. Questions from the audience will also be taken.
The Town Hall will be held in the City Council chambers, 250 Hamilton Ave. from 6:30-8 p.m. It will also be recorded and posted later on Simitian’s website: supervisorsimitian.org.
Stanford needs to make sure that the additional housing units somehow cover the increased academic cost to the Palo Alto School district.
As part of the package, Stanford should provide flood insurance to all of the Palo Alto homeowners impacted by their expansion. All of the additional water run-off from paving additional thousands of acres will overflow the Palo Alto creeks.
