Underground utilities-- what happened?

Original post made by Midtown Guy, Midtown, on Jul 26, 2011

For a while, we had read a great deal about finishing the undergrounding of utilities. I was walking recently on Colorado in Midtown and noticed there were no utility poles near Middlefield. But walking further toward Alma, I saw the old mess of wires and poles in various tilts, and I wondered why the work wasn't completed. I know each property owner involved had to pay a special assessment when his/her property came due. Lately, I've heard nothing. Has the project been abandoned?

The Colorado/Middle field area was completed. You must have walked beyond the limits of that project. The next area to be put underground is north of downtown and a part of Cambridge.

Under grounding just shows you where are City Council is coming from. Under grounding was promised to ALL of Palo Alto some 35 years ago. In fact our Utility rates were increased so this could be paid for.

The City has under grounded about 85 percent of North Palo Alto but only about one-third of South Palo Alto. Now they take the additional utility rates we pay, and instead of completing the under grounding, transfer the money to the general fund.

How about doing a whole lot more under grounding in South Palo Alto so our side of town gets treated the same as North Palo Alto.

Midtown has not been completely undergrounded either. And even along Colorado Ave there are still ugly posts at Friends Lodge parking lot. Louis rd has not been undergrounded either.
