A heavy rainstorm that hit the Bay Area overnight is causing floods, accidents and traffic snarls throughout the region.

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for several Bay Area counties this morning, including Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Other counties hit hard by the steady downpour include San Francisco, Alameda and Santa Cruz counties. The advisory was lifted at 7:45 a.m.

The California Highway Patrol is reporting several incidences of flooding on area roadways, including U.S. Highway 101 in San Francisco at Cesar Chavez Street, westbound Interstate Highway 80 at Gilman Street, and roadways throughout Marin and Solano counties.

Motorists should not attempt to drive across standing water when it covers the roadway, the CHP is warning.

Heavy rains may cause elevated water levels in small creeks and streams, according to the weather service.
