Palo Alto residents may notice a brownish tinge to their water and lower water pressure for periods of time this week as the city began its annual flushing of the water distribution system to get rid of sediment that built up in the pipes over the last year.

The flushing began on Sunday and will continue through Saturday, April 26.

The Utilities Department will open fire hydrants to help clean out the sediment.

City officials advise residents to stop using water if it is discolored and instead run a garden hose for 10 minutes to clean out the discoloration. People are also advised not to use discolored water to do laundry.

The water remains safe for drinking, even if it is discolored, officials said.

A map of the areas to be flushed along with a schedule is available at www.cityofpaloalto.org by clicking on “Departments,” then “Utilities” and finally “2008 Water Flushing Schedule.”

For more information call the Utilities Department at 650-496-6982.
