Will Al Gore call for the shutting down of coal fired electric generating plants?

Original post made by GGRick, Charleston Gardens, on Feb 25, 2007

Since coal fired power plants emit enormus amounts of CO2 and other toxic pollutants, including mercury and radioactive materials into the atmosphere they must be phased out and the other alternative available to produce the same amount of electricity without producing CO2 and the other toxic materials must be built ASAP. Al Gore has never said how we are going to produce electricity without the CO2 and the other toxic materials. The coal lobby is probably spending hundreds of millions of dollars to stop any action to phase out the burning of coal. I would speculate that the coal lobby is behind the propaganda aginst the alternative to coal. I have heard that the S.J. Merc News has an articl on this topic in todays paper, Sunday.

One of the problems with lay discussions of hazardus materials is the failure to evaluate the dose and a failure to credit the benefits. Live a mile downwind of a coal fired plant, you might occasionally whiff the stack gas, but you benefit immediately and continuously from the electricity. One backyard barbeque will put more products of combustion in your lungs that a year's plant operation.
While I share your enthusiasm for nuclear power, I question whether there is a clear and present danger from continuing to rely on coal until we are built out on nukes.
Just checked my mail box - no coal company checkes yet. And I don't expect a check from Soros.
