The Big Problem with Ethanol

Original post made by a, Adobe-Meadow, on Apr 25, 2008

Well, it turns out ethanol is less efficient than oil, causes skyrocketing food inflation to the point where the U.N. declares today that we have a global food crisis, and makes South Americans increase deforestation to make room for fuel crops.

Who's idea was this? George Bush. Who supported it? Hillary Clinton.

I'm afraid this post is misleading. The global food price crisis is caused primarily by (1) the increasing demand from China and India as their recent economic success has allowed more of their large populations to afford to eat more food; and (2) trade barriers. The increased use of food grains for fuel, while promoted in the US by hastily and badly designed legislation, are a proverbial drop in the bucket of the world food price crisis.

Brian has it exactly right. Ethanol is a convenient whipping boy these days. It is probably not a good long-term solution to our problems, but it can help us in the short term until we develop better biofuel technology. As one Stanford professor said, "ethanol is for drinking". We can make better fuels from plants eventually, that won't use high-quality food crops.

There seems to be evidence that food is being horded by traders to artificially inflate the price. I feel very sorry for those at the subsistence level who will now starve because of these crooks.
