What Happened to the Homecoming Court in PAUSD?

Original post made by Paly Alum, Palo Alto High School, on Sep 1, 2013

Anyone know when and why it ended? We still have Spirit Week, the Homecoming football game with floats and the Homecoming Dance. Are we too intellectual to engage in such shallowness?

The kids are too sophisticated. Also, some foreign parents have repeatedly objected to it.

I think since Homecoming Courts are based on looks and popularity, they were deemed to competitive (kind of like our non-existent GATE program).

Looking back over the years I've been a parent at Gunn and even when I attended Gunn it seems that being on the Homecoming Court has/had more to do with campus involvement (clubs, athletics, student government, philanthropic endeavors, etc.) then looks or popularity. Maybe when palo alto parent left that comment he/she meant that the kids that are voted onto court tend to be the "popular" kids because they are so involved and well known throughout the school and different groups so they get the votes? Or maybe it's very different at Paly. Either way, it's too bad it's looked at like that.

The ones who won were usually justified because they were nice to everyone, vs. just being attractive. And they weren't necessarily involved in school activities. It was a fun tradition and a shame it's gone when other schools still have it. "Too competitive?" Competition is the name of the game in Palo Alto.
