Feedback on Middle College at Foothill

Original post made by Paly Parent, Duveneck/St. Francis, on Dec 12, 2012

My daughter has expressed an interest in Middle College at Foothill. The positives are the ability to take Foothill college courses in addition to the English and History taught at Middle College. I'd like to know if most students who wish to attend get in. Unfortunately, I have also heard that the Middle College students like to smoke pot, etc. during their breaks at school. I would love feedback from students or parents of students who have attended Middle College.

My daughter attended Middle College while a student at Paly. It was a great experience, academically, but there were two big problems.

The first was that the units she earned at the Middle College were good only at Foothill. She went to a college out of state that would. It accept the units, although Foothill had assured us that they would. From that aspect, it was a waste. However, it did giver her a taste of what to expect in college.

The other, and this upset me more than her, was that she was not allowed by Paly to "walk with her friends" at the graduation ceremony! Instead she had to watch it from the bleachers!

Keep these two things in mind, as well as : if your child cannot drive, and has to take public transportation, there are some creepy people who ride the bus. My daughter was stalked by a fellow bus rider for six months. He followed her around the Foothill Campus, apparently having nothing better to do. Drive her yourself if she cannot.

Do you hear about the info mtgs? All have happened except for the mandatory parent meeting at Foothill March 14th in Room 1501. I think some of the info given by the other parent may be incorrect now. Pretty sure they said the kids can walk with their class, for instance. And like any California community college, many classes are set up to be transferable to the UC or CSU systems. Private colleges in other States have their own rules.

I have two children who are graduates of Foothill Middle College. Firstly, it is completely untrue that someone would not be allowed to walk with their graduating class. Both of my kids attended at their home schools.

Students are still enrolled in their home high school and are encouraged to walk graduation with their friends. The only reason they would not be invited to walk, is if they did not complete enough units to actually graduate or did not jump through the high school's hoops of checking out, returning books etc. .

Most students walk in their home high school graduation and the FMC graduation. It is an amazing and personal affair. Imagine a graduation where the teachers treasure each and every student. There are no numbers there or reading off cards. It is a place where every body knows your name.

It is also untrue that schools do not accept Foothill Units for credit. Some classes that are remedial are not accepted. but all CA schools accept the college level units. Some liberal arts colleges do not accept units from any other college, but that is not the norm.

BTW-Units or no-learning is never a waste!!!

Middle College saved my child's life. He was so unhappy in the traditional high school. I will always be grateful to his caring, thoughtful and inspiring teachers who taught him that having an intellectual life is valuable. He has now graduated from one the most rigorous colleges in the country and works in S.F. Thank you to Karen, Seth and Michael-Kudos.

I hope the posts above did not discourage anyone from applying to this life changing program. It is truly awesome!

A very very pleased parent.
