Leave Israel/Palestine off Town Square

Original post made by Jack Monroe, College Terrace, on Jul 19, 2007

I just have to say I am so tired of seeing the rabid Israel/Palestine people constantly posting about that contentious issue on Town Square and then whining when/if their posts are removed. Why do these folks think that a local forum on a local website is the proper place to constantly and endlessly air their grievances about an international issue? We have plenty of Palo Alto issues to discuss -- libraries, police, storm drains, emergency preparedness, council.

Please stop inundating us locals with your non-stop bickering about Israel and Palestine.

It would be nice if such discussions were only about new issues.

I am a little befuddled..did I blink and miss a bunch of threads? I haven't seen any new threads about this subject in ..a couple weeks?

This would have made sense to me a few weeks ago, but now I am just befuddled.

I will be happy when we can intelligently discuss various points, NEW points, in the future, but in the meantime it is nice not to have to respond to every repetition that comes up.

Considering this is the forum for "issues beyond Palo Alto", what's your beef? There is a forum for "Palo Alto Issues"...

I personally don't want to see this highly sensitive issue on any online forum because it is so contentious and really should be explored in person for full understanding, but considering the new age of discussion, and in a forum called, "beyond", you shouldn't have to worry so much about the "bickering", just don't click on that link.

There have been many threads started over the past couple of weeks, but they are taken off within hours. Some of the threads that I have seen are just the same old "look at this website to show....". I think that the Weekly is doing the right thing as these threads are either not of interest to the majority of us, or just the same couple of people arguing. I know it is easy to avoid them if they are here, but it is nice if we don't have to see them.

Or is it "HearHear!" Oh anyway ... I'm GLAD to see that hardly anyone replied to this. Mr. Wallis, I think we can interpret "silence" as "assent". And while we're at it, can someone PUH-LEASE get the stupid Middle East off NPR and CNN? Thank yeeouuuuu!

Under no circumstances is it assent. At all. It is just absurd to think that we have a "beyond PA" threadline that will forbid middle east issues, as if we have some kind of restriction on the ability to express opinion in the I didn't waste my time since this was more or less already said. And, the manner of addressing contentious issues is being addressed in other threads.

What is everyone supposed to do, riot and parade to insist on this threadline?

I DO want to "hear hear" opinions and facts about contentious issues, and look forward to the new format which will allow this forum to stick to a civilized manner in doing so.

Don't miss out on the discussion!
