Seniors forge friendships through lunch program

Original post made on Mar 4, 2012

Tom Barry was holding court at the La Comida lunch program in Palo Alto Tuesday, Feb. 28, 12 seniors joining him at the long folding table, all intent on his words. "Are we ready for trivia?" he asked, his voice reedy. For people like those gathered at Barry's trivia table, La Comida serves as a place both to dine and to mingle -- and at a time of life when friends and intellectual stimulation can be harder to come by.

Avenidas does NOT provide the senior nutrition program and does NOT support the senior nutrition program. Senior nutrition is a completely separate program run by a separate nonprofit, LA COMIDA. Please choose to support La Comida if you like the program.

Avenidas has always promoted La Comida as if it were its main program and reason for being, and that is why so many people, seniors or not, have supported Avenidas over the years.

It seems crazy to me that Avenidas is expanding, yet will not have a room large enough to have room for this program, and the idea of a café is a lot less appealing, because there are tons of cafés nearby.

This seems very short-sighted of Avenidas, and I don't think most Palo Altans agree with Avenidas displacing La Comida from the Senior Center.

La Comida has been the best thing about Avenidas, and they should change their plans to accommodate La Comida.
