IT IS TIME...

Original post made by Walter_E_Wallis, Midtown, on Jun 14, 2011

It is time to acknowledge that the time of marriage has passed. You can still do the trek up the aisle, 'til death do us part thing, but government will no longer intrude upon that relationship.
With the government-church association severed, we can substitute contracts that cover child support, division of assets, combination of incomes and such. A body of relationship law, separate from religious and cultural rules, would then be developed. Government sanction of religious ceremony would end.

I totally agree. The government should stay out of religion (and vice-versa).

If people want to make their own personal commitments and get "married" in a church or on the beach or wherever, fine. But if they want legal recognition of their status, whatever that may mean, they need to execute a binding civil contract.

I think this arrangement would end a lot of silly contention, like the kerfluffle over same-sex marriage. If a church won't "marry" LGBT(or mixed-race) couples, they can take their business to a more congenial venue, and who cares?
