Paly grad pushes for equity as leader in Teach for America

Approaching her Stanford University graduation in 2003, Emily Bobel was poised to accept a job with a biotech firm when she noticed a recruiting poster for Teach for America on campus.

bravo emily. great stuff. we have terrific admiration for TFA and the impact it is making in students, teachers, administrators, communities. let's close the achievement gap!

I applaud that Emily used her resources to obtain supplies for her students,and it sounds like she had little support to conduct her classes.

However, "At one point, Bobel found herself reduced to grabbing handfuls of the small, half-pencils from the plastic boxes at IKEA." Sounds like stealing to me.

I would encourage Emily to re-look at her methods and her position as a role model and question whether condoning stealing is the message she wants to send to young students.

I would imagine that had she approached Ikea and asked them for a donation of pencils, I am almost certain that they would have supported her work.

We need more committed and talented young people like Emily to dedicate themselves to "leveling the playing field" for children who, through no fault of their own, obviously, are victims of poverty and are relegated to attending inferior schools, for the most part. Without such dedication, education will never make enough of a difference to reverse the ever-widening gap between the "haves" and the "have-nots."

I don't understand how these people get hired - how do they displace credentialed teachers? Aren't the districts choosing to hire them??

Yes, that is stealing. And if she was from EPA she would now have a record.

Bigger issue is why do school districts go through TFA. Essentially districts are just hiring temporary uncredentalled teachers. Why do they need TFA to do that? TFA has an annual budget of $190 million. They aren't spending the money on their teachers because the districts pay salary and benefits. So mainly TFA exists to pay it's own staff.

Districts hire TFA corps members because they are energetic, highly motivated and have driven change in the schools they teach in. Many principals want corp members because they have had such a positive impact. The TFA budget does support its staff but also is used for the summer boot camp that its corp members attend-intense training where the corps members live in dorms and start teaching in summer school programs.
