Wither Daytime TV Soap Operas?

Original post made by Paul Losch, a resident of Palo Alto, on Sep 18, 2009

I can remember when I stayed home sick from school that my mother would always watch "As the World Turns," a daily soap opera, one of many back in the day.

I heard on NPR today that a soap opera that started on radio and gravitated to TV, is it Guiding Light? has been discontinued after a tenure that pre-dates me.

I spent a summer while in high school in Spain, and several of the girls in my group were into the soaps, and complained that they were missing out on the "drama" while they were not in the States. I did not get it, but that's OK. And it was when there were 3 networks, some time ago.

Since I am at work during the day, I really don't know what there is to watch these days, and I likely would not like my choices, methinks. The few times I have seen TV during the day, it is Jerry Springer and the like, and you can have it. The sad thing is that people who are able to watch TV during the day appear to get fed the likes of Jerry. That is scary.

Bring back the soap operas.

Paul, perhaps you meant "whither" instead of "wither". Please don't regard this as a withering indictment of your spelling.

But don't worry, the Obama administration is a wonderful daytime soap opera. The recent episodes on Van Jones and ACORN were marvelous.
