Where's dinner?

Original post made by Cranky Steve, Midtown, on Feb 21, 2008

Dear Palo Altans,
can anyone recommend a 27" wall oven that doesn't break and you've used more than 2 years but less than a decade? Yes, I've checked Consumer Reports, but they were the ones who said my Thermador had a good repair record at the time--not now. I'm tired of my annual or bi-annual Thermador repairs.

From what I've read, I believe they're now making ovens to break instead of the reliable old knob-controlled ovens. And even a new Viking with its knobs has a horrible repair record. HELP!!

Good luck - I would be careful buying anything from the U.S. It seems Whirlpool now dominates the main US market for midrange household appliances (not mentioning specialty professional market, Viking etc that some Palo Altans may have...) I have recent general advice to offer (the last 6 years) rather than a focus on ovens specifically.
Our experience has been terrible with Whirlpool products (Kitchen Aid, supposed to be higher end Whirlpool! Kitchen Aid looks good but breaks down under warranty and also after. The old Sears Kenmore is now Whirlpool and so there is no difference, that used to be so reliable, and I think they own more lines now, too. They have a monopoly on service, they do not permit warranty service from independent firms, you have to call this one firm that has been extremely poor in our experience and covers all of Nor CA. The independent service firms are just about run out of business. We have had problems with microwave, dishwasher, double ovens, refrigerator, washer & dryer were Kenmore Elite, I believe, only lasted 5 years = a nightmare. Fortunately, the refrigerator breakdown was when still under warranty, but the huge hassle, time and service call fees mean that I will never purchase from Whirlpool again.
Years ago Whirlpool was fine, not now.
I am slowly replacing all my appliances with products from Asia or Europe: Miele dishwasher has been great, Samsung washer and dryer are effective.
In sum, I am extremely disappointed in American manufacturing of these products and this saddens me.

22 years ago I installed a gas wall oven by Roper. It is wonderful, I wouldn't exchange it for the world. It's cooked many a Thanksgiving turkey - successfully!!! My gas range by O'Keefe & Merritt, another gem, when it needs replacing I plan to buy one from Ikea.

Meanwhile, I've had three diswashers by GE and Kenmore - they break!!

Thank you, I'll look into non-US makers of electric ovens. As for the wonderful old Ropers, guess who makes them now -- Whirlpool.
