Cardinal men hoops ousted from the NIT by Alabama

Original post made on Mar 27, 2013

The Stanford men's basketball team fell into old habits and that was not good news. Dwight Powell was in foul trouble early and the Cardinal was missing shots. It all led to a 66-54 setback to host Alabama on Saturday in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament.

Dear Editor,

I am extremely disappointed that Jonny Dawkins will stay for his sixth year as head coach, and Benard Muir has apparently said that if Stanford isn’t in the NCAA tourney next year, Dawkins is out.

Maples was once considered one of the best venues to watch basketball. Now the atmosphere is dead air and barely over half capacity. The 6th Man Club is half full and showing increasingly less enthusiasm. It kills me to see potential Stanford football recruits at Maples, seeing for themselves the partisan crowd reluctant to even applaud, let alone stand. If you are a fan, or potential recruit, attending a Stanford football, baseball, or women's basketball game, you know you will see an exciting national championship contender playing with heart, and few mistakes. A fan or potential recruit, going to a Stanford basketball game may see new exciting methods of blowing basketball games being cheered on with less excitement a child going to the dentist. The games are so ugly, its no wonder no one is in the stands.

Dawkins has never gone to the NCAA tournament, despite having a top 25 class in 2011. That class, although being the core of the team, hasn’t improved at all from being rookies to being seniors next year.
This is especially crucial because giving a win-or-else ultimatum threatens the program’s credibility, and stability is one of the most important assets as a coach. A recruit signing on to Stanford football knows that David Shaw will be his coach as long as David Shaw wants to coach him. Even a recruit signing with Mark Marquess’s Stanford baseball team knows Marquess is a Stanford grad with 37 years to his credit as the manager of Stanford Baseball. A recruit signing on to Stanford basketball has no idea of who will coach him at Stanford. Since there are four players that will be seniors next year, Stanford will have to convince four players to replace them, and if those replacements end up being sub-par, the program will be hurting for those four years.

There are advantages that go with coming to Stanford, which the football team especially has been able to capitalize on, mainly the weather and education. Because of the education, it has convinced stars to stay on campus (see: Luck, Andrew, and Appel, Mark) so it probably won’t have the problem of seeing players going straight to the pros, such as Kentucky.

However, Muir’s decision will not only ruin next season, but the next four seasons after that.
