Narrow sidewalks

Original post made by Anon, Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Sep 19, 2012

Unlike many people who post here, I have no objection to 3-5 story buildings in the built-up areas around town. But, many of these redevelopments have traditional suburban narrow sidewalks, with the structures right up against the sidewalk. The sidewalks are not being expanded as part of the redevelopments. New York City does it better than this. It is ugly, and, discourages foot traffic. If the city actually wants to encourage foot traffic, redevelopments need to widen the sidewalks.

I agree. Big new developments must be required to provide safe sidewalks near the projects (that connect to nearby business districts and schools). They should also be required to provide safe bike lanes or bike paths connecting the developments to other parts of the city. Car-only developments are a shame.

Anon: If the developers of these projects widen the sidewalks, they have to reduce the size of the building. That means less space to rent out and therefore less profit for the investors. Also, wider sidewalks cost more to build.

Please be satisfied that they aren't building these developments in our neighborhoods, and let it go.

Yes, lets all work for more profits for billionaire developers!
Great Plan, Eileen!
Actually Judith Wasserman on the ARB wants narrower sidewalks too.
Great Plan Judith!

Of course Judith has nice wide sidewalks in a walkable suburban neighborhood (and a dragon painted on her house???)

Wide sidewalks are not only safer, they feel better!
