My insurance agent passed on some scuttlebutt recently that leads me to believe that if you do not have defensible space at your property, you better dig some. The largest insurance companies asked the insurance commission to raise premiums for homeowners and renters and were given a flat 'no'. They are taking a hit of monumental losses year after year after year due to wildfire. They do not have the reserve to pay out claims if there is another Paradise fire (relatively small in wildfire footprint terms), yet claims still keep rolling in. There is still a backlog of processing claims from that fire in 2018. If you buy one of those mega millions houses for sale, if it goes up in flames you will not be covered. How ironic would that be, if former residents of mansions end up living on the streets. We have many Santa Rosa fire refugees here too, in the tents. And CZ complex fire. All it takes a spark, dry grasses and a steady breeze.
