Eight people face felony charges for organized Apple theft operation

Eight people are facing felony charges for their alleged involvement in a theft scheme targeting Apple stores and stealing about $1 million in electronic products, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on Thursday.

I don't understand why Apple can't brick the products by disabling them from being activated. That's the best theft deterrent out there. Maybe I just don't understand Apple products and have no idea how to activate one.
