Barron Park's new principal aims to forge partnerships by making home visits to each student's family

Original post made on Jan 21, 2022

Barron Park Elementary School principal Judy Argumedo has set herself the goal of visiting every student's home to meet with their families. Rather than have parents and students come to her, she's going straight to them.

Kudos to her for this outreach - communication is SO valuable to every part of our lives! And it's a recognition of the value of each student - each one is seen as important. I hope other schools find ways of doing similar things - larger student bodies would need several people doing it, but it's certainly do-able.

But wonder why her prior years at the district have not moved the dial on the achievement gap or the district's repeated conduct in disproportionately designating certain racial demographics as special Ed? Though she was in charge of these and related things at PAUSD?

Maybe PA weekly should do its HW.

As a former PAUSD parent, I am not sure I would want a visit from the school principal and I feel quite sure my kids would definitely not.

I would much prefer the principal at school dealing with some of the urgent issues, bullying, wastage, etc.

Be present at recess, lunchtime, drop off and pickup time. Get to know the parents at school events. Be easy to contact, returning emails and phone calls in a timely manner. Take notice of our concerns. Pay attention to what parents want. Give our concerns a hearing rather than a platitude reply. But please, do not spend time coming to my house so that you can check us off on a list that says outreach to families.

Good for you, Principal Argumedo. Your reaching out to the Barron Park families is excellent.
For a child’s school principal to want this deeper understanding of students and their families is rare and valuable.
Lucky BP Elementary to have her leadership.
