Well said, Council Member Burt. The police have an important and very difficult job in our community. There may be some bad actors (as there are in many human organizations) or moments when individuals exercise poor judgment, but we need police services. If you have ever been assaulted or robbed or needed emergency help, you will understand this better.

I am visiting Portland right now where a lot of police have quit because of constant criticism. As a result, there are armed vigilantes roaming some areas, making everyone--business owners, residents, visitors uncomfortable. It has been bad for the economy and community safety. I hope Palo Alto will take a more thoughtful approach.

Let's be careful to approach this with facts and respect for both citizen rights and appreciation for the challenging work the department's officers do every day. Let's work with the department to find solutions that move us toward positive action that support new approaches to hiring and training practices that will get us where we want to be--a welcoming, safe, and caring community.

Thank you PAPD for your service. Let's work together to make the department the best it can be.
