Agreeing with the first poster. There is absolutely no Aloha spirit in Palo Alto. None whatsoever.

I think it's a bit unfair to paint with broad brushstrokes and say Palo Alto Residents are only too concerned with money and their vanity. We do not know who did this theft. It could have been a non-Palo Alto resident. That garage where this theft occurred should have video cameras installed.

It is terrible this happened. Even if Water Polo equipment were replaced or loaned out.. it's not the same. If you're involved in any sports, you'll know for a competition, you want a specific equipment that is broken into and is yours. As well.. swim gear can be very expensive.

On the bright side, if the insurance covers their equipment, any worn or almost worn equipment that needed replacing will be replaced with new items.

Feel terrible this happened to a visiting team. Such massive theft.

When we lived in College Terrace, there were a lot of door to door sales people peddling all sorts of goods. When I asked, none of them lived in Palo Alto. They come over and sell their wares. Theft can also be the same.

Amazing that someone can break into a car and steal stuff in such a public place and no one notices or does anything? Or at least get a picture of their license plate? We all need some schooling on auto theft and break ins - what to do to catch these people - or at least get some pictures so that they can be identified. Otherwise we are just sitting ducks. I guess we need signs everywhere to keep your stuff in your room until you are on the way to the airport.

Have you ever visited Hawaii? I go twice per year. They don't even know what designer luggage is. Not only, is this poster implying that Palo Altans stole their gear? The PAPD reports are clear: criminals visit from elsewhere (even as far as hours north). Palo Altans are not responsible for our car thefts. The criminals think Palo Alto is one big candy store.

We do too and Hawaiians are familiar with brands such as TUMI (our choice of luggage).
As a matter of fact, one local even asked. "Are you from California?"
And my kid replied, "We're from Palo Alto!"

Getting back to the theft...it's going to be challenging fencing used swimsuits and water polo balls.

99% of them aren't. With the price of gas today, anyone who drives 1-2 hours away just to steal some rubber balls and a bunch of used swimsuits is obviously short on both schooling and common sense.

Plus, when people think of designer luggage, they think Louis Vuitton and Gucci, not Tumi. And there is no correlation with a Hawaiian knowing your Tumi luggage to guessing you are from California. There are many clues for recognizing a mainlander.

As reported in Hawaii the girls lost cameras,laptops,head phones in addition
to water polo gear - that's how it comes to $16,000. Palo Alto has no security
cameras or video surveillance in the public parking lot to deter crime and the
Police Dept is understaffed with unfilled positions.
