The Palo Alto girls basketball team completed its second undefeated Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division season in the past three years, beating visiting Saratoga, 50-41, in the regular-season finale on Monday’s Senior Day.

Palo Alto (20-3, 12-0), who won its third straight league title, will find out its Central Coast Section tournament fate during Wednesday’s seeding meeting.

With a team comprised of seven players set to return and the junior varsity also finishing 12-0 in league play, it’s easy to get excited about the future.

The present isn’t so shabby either. Seniors Ellie Jeffries, Lauren Daniel, Annie Niethammer and Esme Stotland will be missed but with sophomores Annika Shah, who averages 24.2 points a game, and Carly Martin, an emerging star who has been on fire in recent games, the Vikings could surprise some people come CCS time.

Shah, Martin and Elif Turgut have combined for 869 of Paly’s 1,237 points thus far, over 70 percent of the team’s offensive production.

The Vikings have been trending toward a more balanced attack in recent games, with players contributing from every position.

Martin scored 13 points to lead the Vikings against Saratoga while Shah added nine points and five assists.

Ilayda Turgut and Jefferies shared top rebounder, each with six boards.

Palo Alto finished as the league leader in both scoring offense and scoring defense.
