Palo Alto police are seeking a man who exposed himself to a woman riding her bicycle near Stanford Hospital last Friday, Nov. 30.

The woman, who is in her 20s, was riding her bicycle north on Pasteur Drive at about 11:15 a.m. and had stopped for a traffic signal at the intersection of Sand Hill Road near the 1200 block, police said in a press release Thursday. As she approached Sand Hill Road, she looked to her left and saw a driver with his pants down. The man was allegedly masturbating while looking at her, she told police.

The man turned west onto Sand Hill Road when the light turned green. The woman described the driver as a white man in his 30s with brown hair and patchy facial hair. He drove a white Nissan Leaf.

Detectives don’t think the incident is related to a Nov. 19 case on East Meadow Drive in Palo Alto. A man exposed himself to a 14-year-old girl in the Fairmeadow neighborhood as she was walking her dog. Police have released a sketch in that incident but have not yet made an arrest.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call the department’s 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413. Anonymous tips can be emailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent by text message or voicemail to 650-383-8984. 1. If the driver was inside his car and privately performing this deed at his own strange discretion, why would some bicyclist even stop to take a look? Curiosity or moral indignation?

Just ignore the guy and pedal on…then report the incident to police if desired.

    > So many predators driving around Palo Alto.

Not condoning this activity but also not sure if it can be considered predatory…just some individual passing the time in a most peculiar manner.

The CA/DMV handbook should discourage such behavior as it could pose a driving endangerment to others.

  2. @keep both hands on the wheel. You are worse then him. trying to find away to justify this monsters actions. Sucks that we have to live with such scum in are city. Again you are just as bad as the monster.

  3. > …trying to find away to justify this monsters actions…Again you are just as bad as the monster.

I’m not justifying anything relative to this odd behavior. Just pointing out that
    (1) I wouldn’t be taking the time to personally observe such bizarre activity, and (2) the guy should be concentrating on his driving.

  4. Why does it always take so long for PAPD and the media to share this information? This kind of information should be shared immediately, with in 24 hours.

  5. If the traffic light was red, it is conceivable that in addition to noticing the driver’s strange behavior, the bicyclist also had some time to note the license plate on his car and report it to the police.

Or even snap a quick cellphone pic for the record.

  6. The perp is controlling a 3500 pound weapon. I don’t blame the woman for getting out of their as safely as possible, even if that means running the red light.

  7. Cyclists, please ALWAYS ride single file, wear a helmet and visible clothing so I don’t have to expose myself when I drive. We all need to share this responsibility because it’s never just the fault of the driver when a cyclist is involved. I saw one run a stop sign too.

  8. > From the PA Weekly article…”The man was allegedly masturbating while looking at her, she told police.”

    (A) Is it possible that he was just watching out for bicyclists as the light was about to change soon? (B) Since the witness mentioned that this occured as she was proceeding along Sand Hill Road, how can she prove or be absolutely certain that her presence was involved in his motivation or incentive? (C) How did she manage to find the time to notice this behavior while in motion on a bicycle?

As aforementioned, taking note of the car’s license plate or a cellphone pic would substantiate this incident and allow law enforcement to pursue the matter further.

  9. > Sure, masturbating while driving is a little gross, but it’s probably still safer than texting.

I would imagine that having an automatic transmission (which most cars are equipped with nowadays) is requisite.

Having to shift gears while depressing a clutch pedal would certainly complicate matters pertaining to this recreational endeavor as it represents another driver distraction and a possible compromise to safely operating a motor vehicle.

To date I have never seen (or heard) of a motorcyclist partaking in such multi-tasking.

  10. Years ago, I worked for Pacific Telephone in Palo Alto. We were wiring a new multi-story building at Hamilton and Bryant and were working on the second floor. One of the guys I was working with was looking out the window and suddenly called out, “There’s a guy driving past with no pants on!”

We rushed over to see but the car had gotten a green light and pulled away. We said he was making up the story when we suddenly saw another driver with no pants on. Amazing!

We spent about two weeks installing systems in the building. As I remember, we saw on average, about one pantless driver every half hour.
